Characteristics of a Good Teacher

Wednesday, 29 June 2022

Not anyone can be a teacher.  A teacher has to possess specific qualities and skills that not everybody can have. Here we show you some of the characteristics and skills a teacher must possess to be a good teacher.

Teaching is one of the most complex jobs nowadays. It requires lots of skills that are difficult to acquire, and knowledge that has to be accurately learnt. Being a good teacher implies change. A change to the world, a change to the life of your students. If you are able to achieve the goals you have planned as a teacher, you will be able to impact the lives of young people. Good teachers can make a difference in the students’ way of learning, in how they see the world and themselves and also how they treat people. Find out if you have the qualities and skills necessary to be a good teacher.

What Makes a Good Teacher?

Communication

A good teacher must be able to communicate in a simple way with her students. As a teacher, you must develop your communication skills in order to create a bond with your students. This does not happen only in an academic context. Every relationship should develop their communication skills. If you achieve this goal, you will be able to connect with your students and create a bond that they will remember as they grow older. Also, good communication will create a good environment for the students.

If you have the ability to communicate your ideas and thoughts in an understandable and practical way, students will learn to communicate in the same way too and they will also be able to understand the concepts in a better way.

Organization

One of the most important characteristics a good teacher must have is organization. Imagine the life of students if they find themselves in a disorganized environment. They would not be able to learn anything and they would end up being completely confused. Organization is an important qualification for teachers. They should be able to set deadlines and communicate them to their students, take notes, check tasks and homework and also make some comments for the following class.

If a teacher is not organized, they would lose track of their students’ learning.

Passionate

A good teacher should be passionate about what they do. Imagine a teacher that hates children, does not know anything about teaching, has no empathy and loathes the classroom environment. Now imagine how sad the students from that class would be. Being passionate means creating a good and healthy environment for the students, one in which they can feel heard and be themselves.

If you teach with passion, students will remember you for the rest of their lives and they will also develop a passion for learning.

Patience

Being a teacher is not an easy task. They are surrounded by more than 10 children, all of them with different personalities and different ways of behaving so teachers have to adapt themselves to all of these personalities and traits in a calm way. Patience is a virtue, and it is really important that teachers have it. Patience will allow the teacher to learn a lot more about the students and the students to be themselves no matter where they are.

Skills

Knowledge

The most important skill a teacher should have is knowledge. Teachers must be prepared to develop students in the different skills they need. Literacy and numeracy are important for preschool children. Moreover, if you are a primary or secondary education teacher, there is a more complex knowledge you might have. It depends on the type of education they are teaching for.

Lesson planning

This skill is related to organization. If you are organized, you will be able to prepare a good class that all of your students will love and appreciate. Lesson planning is important because it helps students to learn in a more organized way. You cannot attend your own class without having a plan in mind. Classes should be organized and have a clear structure. They should have a clear beginning and end.

Technology

This is not a compulsory skill you must learn, but it would make your life easier. Planning classes would be easier with technology, as well as conducting them through technology. Nowadays, there are several technological resources that will help teachers create and develop a fruitful class. Besides, imagine what would have happened during the lockdown if teachers did not know how to use technology.

Technological skills are not compulsory but they are really helpful for teachers.

Listening skills

One thing students appreciate more than learning is being heard. Students want you to listen to them, be empathetic, give them a hand (or an ear). If you are a good listener, they will trust you and that will help create a beautiful environment. Each student has their own way of expressing themselves and you should be able to listen and understand all of them.

If you are a good listener, you may be great for teaching.
