More than 175 coronavirus vaccines: Australia is at the front of the race

Friday, 14 August 2020

Companies, labs and universities are trying to induce immunity to the covid-19 virus for the next year, when the standard time is 10 years.

The race to create a vaccine against coronavirus started on January, when the genome was deciphered. Nowadays WHO ensures that there are 175 vaccines being developed, 35 of which are being testes in humans. Laboratories and universities from Australia, United States, China and United Kingdom are on their final track.

Several reports claim the standard time to create a dose able to provoke an immune response is over ten years. But the global crisis has pushed governments, scientists and companies to designate resources in a way never seen.

In Australia, Murdoch Research Institute is testing to see if the vaccine Bacillus Calmette-Gueri used against tuberculosis can generate protection against covid-19. On the other hand, Queensland University had started a month ago dosing healthy adult participants. There is another clinical trial going on at Royal Adelaide Hospital’s PARC Clinical Research facility, The vaccine was developed by company Vaxine and researchers at Flinders University.

Oxford’s University is the lead in United Kingdom for developing a vaccine.

Over a moth ago, USA was last entering the final phase of its vaccine, with clinical trials conducted with over 30,000 volunteers. The government has two options, Modern Company, which was the first in testing in humans, and another one with the german BioNtec and American Pzifer, both with successful results of their first phases.

This critical context enhances the importance of medicine and investigation. If you are interested in taking part in these discoveries, you should start your academic path with a bachelor’s degree in biomedical science and continue with a master’s degree in research.
